In May of 1996 this product began
an extensive three year CRADA (Cooperative Research And
Development Agreement) testing procedure with the U.S. Navy.
The result of this agreement is giving us continuous test
data. Testing has been performed in accordance with ASTM
D4541-95 Standard Test Method for Pull-Off Strength of
Coating using Portable Adhesion Tester Type II (model 106)
made by Eclometer with a 0-2000 psi scale. With this test
equipment no coating to substrate (adhesion) failures were
reported. See reprint of pull test at NRaD below.
There are many possible applications for this copper product
including electronics, radiation management, industrial
uses, microwave absorption and construction. One Navy use
might be a marine anti-fouling coating to protect ship hulls
from marine organisms.
Copper is a very effective anti-foulant that has been in use
for many years. The Environmental Protection Agency,
however, is trying to reduce both the amount of a copper
that finds its way into the marine environment and the
volatile organic compounds that are released during coating
application. This process might effectively solve both of
these concerns. Many other similar marine applications may
be possible such as protecting docks, bridges or drilling
platforms.
The principal investigator at NRaD is Jim Jennings, Code
662, Materials Sciences Branch. Prior to initiating the
CRADA, quick look tests done in the Branch lab showed the
coating to have promise as both an anti-fouling and
anticorrosion coating. Specific efforts planned within the
materials lab include salt fog and immersion corrosion
tests, coating adhesion, scratch and abrasion tests and
anti-fouling properties testing of the copper variant of the
product. An evaluation goal will be to establish preliminary
cost effectiveness for this product with advantageous
results opening the possibility of field testing.
If the US Navy can test this product under such extreme
conditions imagine what a boon it will be to the building
industry!
